Growing up in Nottingham (England), Tony worked in plastic engineering and theatre, ceramic and toy design before taking an Industrial Design degree at Sheffield City Polytechnic. After graduating, he spent three years in New York working as a designer in interiors, furniture and lighting. Back in London he was responsible for Design Selection accreditation at the Design Council covering transportation, sports equipment, computers and consumer products.

British Rail’s Head of Design
Appointed Head of Design at British Rail in 1988, Tony ran a team responsible for corporate design, graphics, environments, vehicle design and liveries, as well as rail sector branding across the national network. His remit also encompassed the design management of Eurostar services. Tony was secretary of the British Railways Board Design Panel, adviser to the Disabled Passenger Advisory Group, and founder member of the BR Quality Management Group.

Transport Design Consortium and Fathom
Following rail privatisation, Tony ran Transport Design Consortium: four design and engineering companies (Jones Garrard, Roundel, Tilney Shane and RFS) working on large international transport projects in Europe and South East Asia. He eventually started his own independent design consultancy (Fathom) working for a diverse portfolio of clients, including UK public transport operators, a European yacht maker, US hotel group and bicycle manufacturers in Taiwan. For two years he worked in Hong Kong as a consultant on the re-branding of the KCR transport system.

He was responsible for signing strategy for the new Delhi Metro Underground system and continued as primary consultant for passenger information design and wayfinding strategy on the new CTRL international stations. He also headed up the station signing and environmental branding work for Heathrow Express.
